Erik ten Hag is poised to return to management after reportedly reaching an agreement in principle to become the new head coach of Bayer Leverkusen.
The former Manchester United manager is set to replace Xabi Alonso, who is bound for Real Madrid as the successor to Carlo Ancelotti. According to The Athletic, final details of the deal are currently being ironed out, with an official announcement expected soon.
Ten Hag is eager to reestablish his credentials following a challenging spell at Old Trafford. He brings prior Bundesliga experience, having managed Bayern Munich II from 2013 to 2015.
Leverkusen had also considered Como manager Cesc Fabregas for the role, but the Spaniard is expected to remain in Italy.
After leading Leverkusen to their first-ever Bundesliga title in the 2023–24 season, Alonso leaves big shoes to fill. The team ended the latest campaign 13 points behind Bayern Munich and will be looking to bounce back strongly under Ten Hag’s guidance.
Preparations for the upcoming season are expected to begin soon, with Ten Hag aiming to make an immediate impact in his return to German football.
