Resident Doctors Suspend Strike

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), has suspended its two-day warning strike, directing members to return to work on Sunday.

NARD President, Dr. Tope Osundara, confirmed the suspension in a message to journalists on Saturday evening, saying the decision was taken as a sign of goodwill.

“Some of our demands have been met. The government has promised to look into other issues. Strike suspended; resumption to work tomorrow. We did this as a sign of goodwill and to assist Nigerians who are seeking healthcare in our various facilities,” he said. The doctors had embarked on the strike on Friday, September 12, over unpaid entitlements and other welfare concerns, a move that disrupted services in public hospitals nationwide. Consultants and other health workers were left to manage patients, leading to delays and overcrowding.

Among their demands are: immediate payment of the outstanding 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund, settlement of five months’ arrears from the 25–35 per cent CONMESS review, and payment of long-standing salary backlogs.

Other issues include payment of the 2024 accoutrement allowance arrears, disbursement of specialist allowances, recognition of West African postgraduate membership certificates by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, issuance of membership certificates by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, and implementation of the 2024 CONMESS.
