US Missionary Calls for Urgent Action on Plateau Killings

A United States-based missionary, Alex Barbir, has raised strong concerns over the Nigerian government’s response to the recent wave of violence in Jos, calling for urgent and decisive intervention to halt the killings and restore stability in the region.

Barbir, who is said to have longstanding ties with local communities in Plateau State, criticized what he described as a “slow and insufficient” reaction by authorities to recurring attacks. According to him, many vulnerable communities—particularly in rural areas—remain exposed to violence, with limited protection despite repeated incidents.

In a statement that has since gained traction online, Barbir stressed that the situation in Jos reflects a deeper, longstanding security challenge that requires more than temporary measures.

He urged President Bola Tinubu to take firmer action, including increased deployment of security forces, improved intelligence coordination, and the swift prosecution of those responsible for the attacks.

Recent reports from affected areas indicate that the renewed violence has resulted in multiple casualties, destruction of homes, and the displacement of residents.

Local accounts suggest that tensions between communities have intensified in recent weeks, raising fears of further escalation if proactive measures are not implemented.

While government officials have maintained that security agencies are actively working to restore calm, Barbir argued that more visible and sustained action is necessary to reassure affected populations. He emphasized the importance of accountability and transparency in addressing the crisis.

Security experts have also echoed calls for a comprehensive approach, noting that military presence alone may not resolve the underlying issues fueling the conflict. They advocate for inclusive dialogue, community-based conflict resolution mechanisms, and socio-economic interventions to address root causes.

Meanwhile, civil society organizations and international observers continue to monitor developments closely, urging all stakeholders to prioritize the protection of lives and the promotion of lasting peace.

As the situation evolves, residents of Jos and surrounding communities remain hopeful that coordinated efforts by the government, local leaders, and international partners will bring an end to the violence and foster long-term stability in the region
