Nnezi Uduma-Olugu Becomes First Female Professor Of Architecture At UNILAG

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has reached a historic milestone in the field of built environmental education.

This is as Professor Nnezi Uduma-Olugu has been elevated to the rank of Professor, making her the first female to achieve this distinction within the university’s Faculty of Architecture

In a dual triumph for gender representation and academic innovation, Professor Uduma-Olugu also takes the helm as the foundational Head of Department for the newly established Department of Landscape Architecture and Urban Design.

While her current title commands immense respect, the path to the professorial chair was paved with grit. Reflecting on her journey, Professor Uduma-Olugu described it as “nothing short of miraculous,” marked by a refusal to yield to setbacks.

“I took JAMB for three years before I got into architecture school, but I finished with a First Class,” she shared. “I got the Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship but almost lost it because they couldn’t find a school in time. I ended up with a gold medal.”

Her academic tenacity continued through a challenging seven-year Ph.D. journey and a long, testing wait for her full professorship. Despite these “birth pangs,” she describes her current state as one of total fulfillment. “I feel overjoyed, engraced, and excited. This has the hand of God written all over it.”

As gathered, Professor Uduma-Olugu is a pioneering scholar and practitioner whose transformative influence has reshaped the landscape of African architecture. By playing a central role in establishing the Master of Landscape Architecture program at the University of Lagos, the first of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa, she has spearheaded a new era of academic innovation.

Beyond the classroom, she champions ecologically responsive design across Nigeria as the founder of Gardens By Designedscapes Ltd, a commitment to practice that is further solidified by her professional standing as a Fellow of both the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) and the Society of Landscape Architecture of Nigeria (SLAN).

When asked about the challenges of being a woman in a traditionally male-dominated field, the Professor credited her upbringing and her professional training for her ironclad resolve. Her late father, Chief Ochea Uduma Ikpa, instilled in his daughters that being female was an advantage, not a hurdle.

“In our training as architects, we were told that we are all ‘males’, gender distinction did not form part of our training,” she noted. “You faced whatever problems the same way your mates did, especially if you planned to succeed.”

Inspired originally by a family friend’s architectural model and later mentored by Polish architect Roman Spetzman, Professor Uduma-Olugu now seeks to be that same source of inspiration for the next generation.

Her research into sustainable urban recreation and resilient landscapes continues to shape the way the “City of Excellence” (Lagos) approaches its urban challenges.

As the Faculty of Architecture celebrates this landmark promotion, Professor Uduma-Olugu’s story stands as a powerful reminder that perseverance and visionary leadership can redefine the boundaries of what is possible in Nigerian academia.
