Labour Party, LP, has elected Nenadi Usman as its National Chairman at its national convention held in Umuahia, the Abia State capital in South-East Nigeria, marking a historic milestone as she becomes the first woman to lead a mainstream political party at the national level in Nigeria.
Usman’s emergence follows her earlier role as head of the party’s National Caretaker Committee, a position she assumed in September 2024 amid the leadership dispute that followed the nullified 2024 Nnewi convention.
Recent court rulings affirmed her leadership, including decisions by the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal.
Before the 2026 convention, her position as caretaker chairman had also been recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, after a January 2026 court judgement.
Also elected at the convention was Ken Eluma Asogwa as National Publicity Secretary, alongside other members of the National Working Committee, including National Secretary Iheanacho Obioma, Deputy National Chairman Nike Oriola, and National Organising Secretary Oluchi Oparah.
The newly elected officials were subsequently sworn in and have assumed office, as the party prepares to strengthen its position ahead of future electoral contests.
The 59-year-old Nenadi Usman who is from Kaduna State was the Minister of Finance between July 2006 – May 2007 under President Olusegun Obasanjo after the resignation of Dr. Okonjo-Iweala. She was subsequently elected into the Senate in 2011 to represent Kaduna South under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
