Tinubu Renames Kaduna Institution After General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has renamed the Institute of Petroleum Studies, Kaduna, in honour of the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, as part of activities marking Democracy Day.

The President announced the decision during his national broadcast on June 12, 2026, describing Yar’Adua as one of the key figures in Nigeria’s democratic development and a strong advocate of national unity and political reform.

According to Tinubu, the institution will now be known as the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology. Nigeria

He explained that the renaming was a way of recognising Yar’Adua’s contributions as one of the “architects of modern democratic Nigeria,” noting his role in shaping political thought, national partnership, and democratic transition in the country.

Yar’Adua, a retired Major General and influential political figure, was widely respected for his involvement in Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement and his leadership during the military-to-civilian transition era.

The Federal Government said the move also aligns with efforts to revitalise and upgrade the institution into a specialised university focused on geological sciences and engineering development.

The announcement has since attracted reactions from political observers and Nigerians who view it as part of ongoing efforts to honour key historical figures in the country’s democratic journey.
