Chimezie Metu Inspires D’Tigers Comeback as Nigeria Advances to FIBA World Cup Qualifiers.
Nigeria’s men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, produced a remarkable comeback to book their place in the next stage of the FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers, with NBA forward Chimezie Metu playing a pivotal role in the team’s resurgence.
After a difficult start to the qualification campaign, newly appointed head coach David Fizdale guided the team to an impressive turnaround.
D’Tigers opened the qualifying window with a hard-fought 84-81 victory over Tunisia, as Chimezie Metu and Ike Iroegbu scored 17 points each to inspire the win.
Nigeria followed up with a dramatic 80-79 comeback victory over Guinea before completing a perfect qualifying window with a convincing win over Rwanda. The three consecutive victories secured Nigeria’s progression to the second round of the African qualifiers for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
Metu’s leadership, scoring, rebounding, and defensive presence proved crucial throughout the campaign, while key contributions from Caleb Agada, Wes Iwundu, Uche Iroegbu, and Kaodirichi Akobundu-Ehiogu helped power D’Tigers’ revival.
The successful qualifying window marks a strong start for coach David Fizdale and gives Nigerian basketball renewed hope as D’Tigers continue their quest to qualify for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Qatar.
