The House of Representatives has called for a comprehensive investigation into the losses suffered by Nigerians during the recent wave of anti-immigration protests in South Africa, as lawmakers push for compensation for affected victims.

The resolution followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Babajimi Benson, who expressed concern over the recurring attacks on Nigerians, which have reportedly resulted in deaths, injuries, destruction of businesses, and the abandonment of properties.

Lawmakers directed the House Committees on Diaspora and Foreign Affairs to document all human and economic losses, compile an inventory of abandoned properties, and recommend legal and diplomatic measures that could help secure compensation for affected Nigerians.

The House also urged the Federal Government to intensify diplomatic engagement with South Africa, pursue appropriate legal remedies, and strengthen bilateral cooperation to better protect Nigerians living and working in the country.

The move comes after weeks of anti-immigration protests in South Africa that led to widespread fear among foreign nationals, prompting thousands of Nigerians to return home through government-assisted evacuation efforts.

Lawmakers said a detailed assessment of the damage is necessary to ensure justice for victims, improve future protection for Nigerians abroad, and hold those responsible accountable through appropriate diplomatic and legal channels.
