The Ghanaian government has declined a GH¢20 million donation offered by MTN Ghana to support citizens affected by recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the government had already made adequate financial arrangements for the evacuation and reintegration of affected Ghanaians and therefore could not accept the telecom company’s support.

While commending MTN Ghana for the gesture, the government said the decision was not a rejection of the company’s goodwill but was based on existing provisions already made for the humanitarian response.

The ministry added that the government remains committed to providing support for every Ghanaian being brought home from areas affected by the attacks. It also pledged to publish a full account of the money spent on the evacuation and reintegration exercise once the operation is completed.
