The Federal Government has paid the promised cash rewards to members of Nigeria’s women’s national basketball team, D’Tigress, following their historic triumph at the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship.

Each D’Tigress player received $100,000, while $50,000 was paid to team officials, completing the cash component of the presidential reward package announced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The reward follows D’Tigress’ historic fifth consecutive AfroBasket title, after Nigeria defeated Mali in the final to retain its dominance in African women’s basketball. The 2025 victory extended Nigeria’s winning streak at the competition, with previous titles coming in 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2023.

President Tinubu had earlier promised the team financial rewards and other incentives in recognition of their outstanding achievement and contribution to Nigerian sports.

The latest disbursement means the Federal Government has now fulfilled the promised cash component of the reward package. The achievement also further cemented D’Tigress’ status as the most successful women’s basketball team in Africa, with seven AfroBasket titles overall.

The victory also secured Nigeria’s qualification for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, adding another major milestone to the team’s remarkable run.
