Princess Astrid of Norway, the elder sister of the late King Harald V, has died at the age of 94, just two days after attending her brother’s state funeral in Oslo.

The Norwegian Royal Palace announced that Princess Astrid died peacefully on Friday, September 11, 2026. Her final public appearance was at King Harald’s funeral on September 9, where she joined members of the royal family and international dignitaries in paying tribute to the late monarch.

King Harald V died on August 28 at the age of 89, after more than 35 years on the Norwegian throne. His funeral was held at Oslo Cathedral and attracted royals and political leaders from around the world.

Princess Astrid was born on February 12, 1932, to King Olav V and Crown Princess Märtha. Following her mother’s death in 1954, Astrid became Norway’s First Lady at just 22 and served in that role for 14 years, until Crown Princess Sonja took over in 1968.

Throughout her life, Princess Astrid carried out official duties on behalf of the Norwegian Royal House and was regarded as a loyal supporter of both her father, King Olav, and her brother, King Harald. She was particularly involved in supporting vulnerable and disadvantaged people.

She married Johan Martin Ferner in 1961, and they had five children. Ferner died in 2015.

Her nephew, King Haakon VIII, described Princess Astrid as a warm, dedicated and dutiful representative of the Royal House and said she had been an important source of support to King Harald and the wider family. He said her death was a great loss to the royal family.

The Norwegian Royal Palace has ordered that the royal flag be flown at half-mast in her honour on the day of her death and again on the day of her funeral. The Norwegian government has also announced that she will receive a state-funded funeral.

Princess Astrid’s death comes during a period of profound mourning for Norway, following the death and funeral of her brother, King Harald V.
