Delegations from world football governing body FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) are in Nigeria today, September 14, for consultations with members of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Congress and other key football stakeholders.

The meetings come amid a leadership vacuum in Nigerian football following the resignation of former NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, members of the NFF Executive Committee and General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi on August 27. The NFF electoral process was subsequently suspended as FIFA and CAF began assessing the situation.

The FIFA and CAF delegation is expected to meet representatives of the various groups that make up the NFF Congress at the Abuja Continental Hotel in Wuse. Participants are expected to include representatives of the 37 State Football Associations, Nigeria Football Coaches Association, Nigeria Referees Association, Nigeria Players Union and various league bodies.

According to the schedule, the delegation will first visit the NFF headquarters at about 11:00 a.m. for discussions with federation officials before proceeding to the wider stakeholder meeting.

Former NFF presidents, including Sani Lulu, Aminu Maigari, Amaju Pinnick and Ibrahim Gusau, have also been invited, alongside former NFF secretaries-general. Representatives of the Federal Government, the National Sports Commission, the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), supporters’ clubs and other football stakeholders are also expected to participate.

The consultations are expected to focus on the NFF leadership crisis, restoring stability to the federation and developing a credible framework for the next phase of football administration in Nigeria. FIFA and CAF are expected to listen to the different stakeholders before determining the appropriate way forward.

The outcome of the meetings could influence the future structure and governance of the NFF, including a possible transition or reform process and the eventual resumption of an electoral roadmap.

The visit is therefore seen as a crucial step toward finding a solution to the crisis and restoring stability and confidence in Nigerian football administration.
