Humanitarian organisations are calling for increased international support for vulnerable communities in Sudan as the country’s prolonged war continues to fuel hunger, displacement and disease.

Aid groups warn that shrinking humanitarian funding is leaving millions of Sudanese without adequate food, healthcare and other essential assistance. They say the crisis risks being overlooked as international attention and financial commitments decline.

Sudan has been engulfed in conflict since April 2023, when fighting broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), commanded by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.

The conflict has displaced tens of millions of people and caused widespread destruction of homes and essential infrastructure. Humanitarian organisations also warn that deaths linked to starvation and limited access to medical care have added significantly to the direct casualties from the fighting.

According to figures cited by humanitarian advocates, fatalities from the conflict have reached about 59,000, while independent estimates suggest the overall death toll, including indirect deaths, could exceed 150,000. Aid groups believe the actual figure could be considerably higher.

Charities are therefore urging governments, international organisations and donors to increase funding for emergency relief while also pressing for stronger diplomatic efforts to secure ceasefires and improve humanitarian access.

The organisations say sustained international engagement is essential to protect Sudan’s most vulnerable populations and help communities begin rebuilding their lives despite the continuing conflict.
