Humanitarian worker killed in Sokoto bandit attack

A humanitarian and field operations professional, Lydia Chinenye Nwankwo, has been killed after suspected bandits attacked a vehicle carrying her and other humanitarian workers in Sokoto State.

The attack reportedly occurred on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, as Nwankwo and members of her team were returning from field operations. Reports place the incident along the Kajiji–Shagari route in Shagari Local Government Area.

According to reports from her family, the attackers opened fire on the vehicle. Nwankwo sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and died from her injuries. Two of her colleagues were also reportedly injured, while the other occupants and the driver survived.

Nwankwo had worked in humanitarian and field operations, supporting vulnerable communities and working in difficult-to-reach areas. Her death has reportedly left colleagues and members of the humanitarian community mourning the loss of a dedicated professional.

The Sokoto State Police Command confirmed that suspected bandits had attacked communities in Shagari Local Government Area. Police spokesperson DSP Ahmed Rufai said the Divisional Police Officer in Shagari had briefed the command, but officers were still gathering information to determine the full circumstances and casualties.

Reports also indicate that a police inspector was killed during the wider attack, although police said further details were still being established.

The incident has renewed concerns about the safety of humanitarian workers and residents operating in communities affected by insecurity in Sokoto. It also highlights the risks faced by professionals who travel into remote areas to provide essential services to vulnerable populations.

Nwankwo’s death has prompted calls for stronger security measures, increased patrols and better protection for civilians and humanitarian teams working in affected communities.
