Obi Promises 10,000mw Electricity If Elected President

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has promised to generate, transmit and distribute at least 10,000 megawatts of electricity if elected president in the 2027 general election.

Obi made the pledge on Thursday, October 29, 2026, during an NDC town hall meeting at the Amadeo Event Centre in Enugu State, where he outlined his plans for the country.

The former Anambra State governor described reliable electricity as critical to reviving industries, creating jobs and stimulating economic growth.

“As I promised, we will generate, transmit and distribute at least 10,000 megawatts of electricity, because we want industrial work,” Obi said.

According to September 2026 data from the Transmission Company of Nigeria’s National Control Centre, Nigeria’s available electricity generation capacity stood at about 5,403.3 megawatts.

Obi said his administration would make the power sector a major priority, arguing that improved electricity supply would help businesses operate more efficiently and create employment opportunities.

Beyond electricity, the NDC presidential candidate also pledged to tackle insecurity and unite the country if elected.

“As president of Nigeria, I will unite Nigeria. As president of Nigeria, I will secure Nigeria. We will deal with security,” he said.

Obi further promised to declare emergencies in education and the fight against corruption. He said his administration would promote greater transparency and accountability in the management of public funds and government borrowing.

He also pledged to improve access to primary healthcare across the country, while emphasising the need to move Nigeria from consumption to production.

The 2027 presidential candidate urged Nigerians to carefully assess political candidates and vote for leadership capable of addressing the country’s economic, security and infrastructure challenges.

Obi’s 10,000MW electricity target is one of the key promises in his campaign as he seeks to present the NDC as an alternative ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
