Nigerian-American computer scientist Chinasa Okolo recognised among TIME’s 100 most influential people in AI

Nigerian-American computer scientist Dr. Chinasa T. Okolo has earned international recognition for her contributions to artificial intelligence (AI), particularly her advocacy for responsible technology development that benefits communities across the world.

Okolo was named among TIME magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in Artificial Intelligence (TIME100 AI) in 2024, in recognition of her research and contributions to shaping discussions around the future of AI.

The United States Mission in Nigeria recently celebrated her achievement, describing her work as an example of American excellence and highlighting her contributions to the responsible development of advanced technologies.

Okolo’s work focuses on ensuring that artificial intelligence is developed and deployed responsibly, with particular attention to communities in Africa and other parts of the Global South that are often underrepresented in global technology discussions.

She has consistently advocated for inclusive AI policies that address algorithmic bias, data protection, digital inequality and the potential risks associated with emerging technologies.

Her contributions include supporting the development of Nigeria’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, the African Union’s Continental Artificial Intelligence Strategy and the International Scientific Report on the Safety of Advanced AI.

Through her research, she has also highlighted how AI could support socioeconomic development in Africa, including applications in healthcare, agriculture, flood detection and crop disease monitoring.

Okolo holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Pomona College and master’s and doctoral degrees in computer science from Cornell University.

She has also worked with prominent international institutions, including the Brookings Institution, the United Nations and the World Bank Group, contributing to research and policy discussions on technology, governance and development.

Beyond her academic achievements, Okolo founded Technecultura, an organisation focused on advancing AI governance and safety for the Global Majority.

Her work emphasises the importance of ensuring that African countries participate actively in shaping global AI policies rather than merely adopting technologies developed elsewhere.

Her recognition highlights the growing contributions of Nigerian professionals to global scientific research, technological innovation and the development of responsible artificial intelligence.

As AI continues to transform industries and societies, Okolo remains an influential voice advocating for a future in which technological advancement is inclusive, ethical and beneficial to communities worldwide.
