17-Year-Old Yobe Girl, Nafisa Abdullah, Wins Global English Title, Defeats 69 Countries In London
In a historic academic feat that has captured national attention, 17-year-old Nafisa Abdullah Aminu from Yobe State, Nigeria, has emerged as the World Best in English Language Skills at the 2025 TeenEagle Global Finals held in London, United Kingdom.
Representing Nigeria through the Nigerian Tulip International College (NTIC), Yobe, Nafisa outshone over 20,000 participants from 69 countries—including several native English-speaking nations—to clinch the prestigious title.
Her victory marks a significant milestone not only for her state but also for the entire country, showcasing Nigeria’s growing prominence on the global academic stage.
A Global Academic Contest of Excellence
The TeenEagle Global Competition is a respected international platform that tests teenagers on English language proficiency, critical thinking, and communication skills. The contest attracts top-performing students from around the world, including countries where English is not the first language.
This year’s finals, hosted in London, brought together exceptional students from continents including Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Nafisa’s outstanding performance not only secured Nigeria’s top spot but also demonstrated the capacity of Nigerian students to compete — and win — at the highest levels.
Family and State Celebrate a National Achievement
The news of Nafisa’s triumph was announced in a statement by Hassan Salifu, head of the Aminu family, who hailed the achievement as the result of hard work, discipline, and focused academic pursuit.
Salifu also attributed Nafisa’s success to the enabling environment fostered by the Yobe State Government, particularly under the leadership of Governor Mai Mala Buni.
“Our daughter’s global triumph is a direct result of His Excellency Governor Buni’s visionary investment in education,” he stated.
He further noted that the governor’s education reforms have enhanced school standards across the state, ultimately paving the way for global recognition.
Outperforming the World
Perhaps most remarkably, Nafisa’s winning score surpassed that of participants from countries where English is the native language — a development many see as a testament to her brilliance, intense preparation, and academic dedication.
Observers say the victory challenges long-standing assumptions about English proficiency being reserved for students in countries like the UK, US, and Canada.
Widespread Jubilation in Yobe and Beyond
The announcement of Nafisa’s win sparked widespread celebrations across Nigeria, especially in Yobe State, where locals see the victory as a major morale boost and a moment of collective pride. Education stakeholders, students, and community leaders have praised the teenager for placing the region on the global map for positive reasons.
The Aminu family expressed deep gratitude to the state government, especially Governor Buni, for his commitment to education in a region often overshadowed by insecurity and limited resources.
“Governor Buni’s educational reforms have elevated our schools and now brought global recognition to Yobe,” the family added.
Inspiration for the Next Generation
Nafisa Abdullah Aminu’s victory serves as a source of inspiration for Nigerian youths, particularly girls in the northern part of the country, where educational challenges persist. Her achievement reinforces the idea that with the right support and opportunities, young Nigerians can compete globally and excel.
The Yobe State Government is yet to issue an official statement, but sources close to the Government House in Damaturu suggest that plans are underway to honour Nafisa for her international achievement.
As the world celebrates her success, Nafisa’s name is now etched in Nigeria’s growing list of global academic champions — a beacon of hope, talent, and determination for generations to come.
