World Cup-Bound Ghana Sacks Coach Otto Addo After Four Straight Friendly Defeats

The Ghana Football Association has dismissed head coach Otto Addo following a string of poor results, just weeks before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Addo’s exit comes after the Black Stars suffered four consecutive defeats in international friendlies, including a 2-1 loss to Germany and a heavy 5-1 defeat to Austria. The disappointing run raised serious concerns about the team’s readiness for the global tournament.

In an official statement, the GFA confirmed that it had “parted ways” with Addo with immediate effect, leaving Ghana without a head coach less than three months before the World Cup kicks off.

Addo, who was in his second stint as head coach after being reappointed in 2024, had earlier guided Ghana to qualification for the 2026 World Cup. However, his tenure was marred by inconsistent performances, including failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and a mixed record of results in charge.

The former Borussia Dortmund player and Ghana international previously led the team at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where the Black Stars exited at the group stage despite a notable win over South Korea.

Ghana, making their fifth World Cup appearance, have been drawn in a tough group alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.

Their opening match is scheduled for June, leaving the football association under pressure to appoint a new coach quickly and stabilize the team ahead of the tournament.

No immediate replacement has been announced, but the GFA is expected to act swiftly as preparations intensify for the competition in North America.
