At home and abroad, a Nigerian is in the news for his talent and exceptional feat in football. He is Zadok Yohanna. His rise to stardom is neither accidental nor a stroll in the park.
Yohanna has become the most expensive Nigerian teenager in football history after completing a £21.5 million move to Premier League (EPL) side Brighton & Hove Albion from Swedish outfit, AIK Stockholm.
The 18-year-old secured a five-year contract that will keep him at the Amex Stadium until 2031, capping a remarkable rise from grassroots football in Kaduna to one of the biggest transfers involving a Nigerian youngster.
Some years ago, life was so different for Yohanna. Born in Bauchi. Moved to Kaduna on his own as a young boy to chase a football dream. Like most young men who come from humble backgrounds, he needed an outlet to distract from the everyday realities of life in Kaduna.
Besides his captivating story, he is a good example in patriotism and self-belief, despite all odds. His journey is a testament to resilience, raw talent, and relentless ambition.
Only a year ago, Yohanna was still honing his skills at Ikon Allah Football Academy in Kaduna before he moved to Sweden in 2025. Today, the 18-year-old finds himself joining one of England’s most admired clubs for developing young players.
Born on June 29, 2007, Yohanna began his football journey in northern Nigeria before earning an opportunity that would change his life. Yohanna like most youngsters all over the world, fell in love with the round leather game.
Just like his never-say-die attitude on the pitch, he didn’t give up. His performances soon caught the attention of scouts from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Yohanna’s relevance lies in the lessons of his career. He rose from a nobody to somebody. He has talents and such have taken him to where it is appreciated and paid for.
His appeal lies not only in his success but in the consistency behind it. His career has unfolded during a period when younger audiences increasingly value resilience and authenticity over displays of glamour or celebrity.Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler spoke highly of the 18-year-old’s talent, expressing confidence that he will become a valuable attacking asset for the team, even though he will require some time to adjust.
“I’m looking forward to working with Zadok. Having seen his games and his attributes, he is a player that can impact games in the final third,” he said. Yohanna performances this season attracted interest from several clubs across Europe. Still, Brighton ultimately won the race for his signature, continuing the club’s well-established strategy of recruiting elite young talents with long-term potential.
“I watch Premier League games a lot, so I know the teams that use young players, and Brighton is one of them,” Yohanna said.
Yohanna joined AIK last summer, and has scored five goals and provided four assists respectively in 18 matches this season before his blockbuster move.
