Former Nigerian Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka, has revealed that World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala persuaded him not to leave Nigeria at a time when he was considering relocating abroad in search of better opportunities.

Speaking during a recent public event, Chidoka said he had seriously contemplated joining the growing wave of Nigerians emigrating, popularly known as “Japa.” However, he said a conversation with Okonjo-Iweala changed his mind.

According to him, she encouraged him to remain in Nigeria and continue contributing to the country’s development rather than seeking opportunities overseas.

Chidoka explained that Okonjo-Iweala reminded him that Nigeria needs capable and committed citizens to drive progress, warning that the country cannot achieve sustainable development if many of its skilled professionals continue to leave.

He said her advice inspired him to stay and continue serving the nation despite its numerous challenges.

Okonjo-Iweala has consistently spoken against the mass emigration of skilled Nigerians, arguing that while individuals have the right to seek better opportunities abroad, the country’s future depends on retaining enough talented people to build its economy and institutions.

She has repeatedly urged governments to create an environment where young Nigerians can thrive without feeling compelled to leave.
