Ugandan super-heavyweight boxer Aziz Abdul, the grandson of former Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, has been disqualified from the 2026 Commonwealth Games after delivering an illegal headbutt during his quarter-final bout against England’s Damar Thomas.

The incident occurred in the third round of the contest, with Abdul trailing on the judges’ scorecards. Referees ruled that the headbutt was illegal and immediately disqualified the Ugandan boxer, handing victory to Thomas and ending Abdul’s medal hopes.

Following the decision, Abdul reacted angrily, accusing match officials of bias and insisting the head clash was accidental.

He also claimed the officiating unfairly favoured the home-based British boxer, though no evidence has been presented to support those allegations.

Thomas, meanwhile, said he was pleased to advance but admitted he would have preferred the bout to end under normal circumstances.

The incident quickly became one of the biggest talking points of the boxing competition, drawing widespread attention because of Abdul’s family connection to Idi Amin and his controversial comments before and after the fight.
