NIGERIAN-AMERICAN POET DANIEL UMEMEZIE NAMED 2026–2027 U.S. NATIONAL YOUTH POET LAUREATE

Nigerian-American poet Daniel Somtochukwu Umemezie has been named the 2026–2027 United States National Youth Poet Laureate, becoming the 10th young person to receive the prestigious honour and the second Nigerian-American to hold the title.

Umemezie, who is from Cedar Falls, Iowa, was selected from a pool of hundreds of young writers and poets from across the United States. The National Youth Poet Laureate programme recognises outstanding young poets whose work combines artistic excellence with civic engagement and social awareness.

The 18-year-old’s poetry draws heavily from his Nigerian upbringing and his experiences of growing up between Nigeria and the United States. His work explores themes including heritage, identity, memory, culture and the complexities of belonging to two worlds.

Umemezie grew up in Nigeria and moved to the United States with his family at the age of 13 after his mother secured a nursing job there. The family initially moved to Texas before settling in Iowa. He has described experiencing significant culture shock after moving to America, but poetry eventually became a way for him to connect his Nigerian background with his new environment.

His interest in words and the arts began at an early age. He was an avid reader and explored several creative fields, including music, drawing, painting and architecture. He also learned to play several musical instruments, including the piano and drums.

Umemezie began writing poetry seriously after an English teacher encouraged him to enter a local poetry competition during his sophomore year. He won the competition and subsequently became the Cedar Valley Youth Poet Laureate and later Iowa Student Poet Ambassador.

His national recognition follows that of Salome Agbaroji, who became the first Nigerian-American to receive the U.S. National Youth Poet Laureate honour in 2023. Umemezie’s selection therefore marks another major achievement for Nigerian-American representation in the American literary community.

As National Youth Poet Laureate, Umemezie plans to use poetry to encourage social justice, political participation and self-exploration. He has also expressed a desire to champion multilingual and diasporic poetry and encourage young people to use their voices on issues that matter to them.

Beyond poetry, Umemezie is also interested in science and technology. He plans to study aerospace engineering at Iowa State University and has already started a company with friends focused on developing drone technology for disaster relief.

His achievement has attracted recognition beyond the literary community. In June 2026, U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley recognised Umemezie in the Congressional Record, describing him as the first Iowan to receive the National Youth Poet Laureate honour and noting that his poetry draws inspiration from his childhood in Nigeria.

Umemezie is expected to travel across the United States during his tenure, taking part in poetry readings, workshops and other programmes designed to engage young people.

His journey from Nigeria to becoming one of America’s leading young poetic voices highlights the power of literature to connect cultures, preserve memories and give young people a platform to speak about identity, society and the world around them.
