South Korean supergroup BTS is celebrating six years since the release of its global smash hit “Dynamite,” the group’s first all-English single and one of the most commercially successful songs in K-pop history.
Released on August 21, 2020, “Dynamite” quickly became a worldwide phenomenon, breaking major records across music sales, streaming platforms, radio and YouTube. The upbeat disco-pop track arrived during the COVID-19 pandemic and was widely embraced for its bright, feel-good message and energetic sound.
“Dynamite” made history by becoming the first song by a K-pop act to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it spent three weeks at the top. Its achievement also made BTS the first Asian act to reach No. 1 on the chart since Japanese singer Kyu Sakamoto’s “Sukiyaki” in 1963.
The song recorded an enormous opening week in the United States, driven particularly by digital sales. It also dominated Billboard’s Digital Song Sales chart and became one of the biggest-selling singles of 2020.
On streaming platforms, “Dynamite” delivered a huge opening day, while its long-term popularity helped it become one of BTS’s most-streamed songs. The track eventually passed major streaming milestones and cemented its place among the group’s biggest global hits.
Its music video was equally successful. The “Dynamite” video broke YouTube records upon release, attracting more than 100 million views within its first 24 hours and setting a record for the biggest YouTube music-video premiere at the time. It has since accumulated billions of views, making it one of BTS’s most-watched music videos.
The song also became a major milestone in BTS’s award history. “Dynamite” earned the group its first Grammy nomination, in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category at the 63rd Grammy Awards. Although BTS did not win the award, the nomination marked a significant breakthrough for K-pop on the Grammy stage.
Beyond charts and awards, “Dynamite” played an important role in expanding BTS’s presence among mainstream Western audiences. Its success demonstrated the growing global influence of K-pop and helped introduce millions of new listeners to BTS during a difficult period worldwide.
Six years later, “Dynamite” remains one of BTS’s defining songs—a record-breaking release that combined commercial success, cultural impact and a message of positivity.
HAPPY 6 YEARS OF “DYNAMITE”! 💜🧨🎂🏆
