Kenya’s National Police Service has introduced special maternity uniforms for pregnant female police officers as part of a wider reform of police uniforms.

The new maternity attire was unveiled during a passing-out parade at the Kenya Police Training College in Kiganjo, Nyeri County, where President William Ruto inspected the newly designed uniforms.

The specially designed uniforms, which include muted or slate-blue dresses, are intended to accommodate female officers throughout pregnancy while allowing them to maintain a professional appearance in line with the National Police Service uniform.

The maternity uniforms were introduced alongside several other new designs for General Duty officers. The wider changes include new shirts, sweaters, trench coats, rainwear and other clothing options for different working conditions.

The new uniforms are expected to be rolled out progressively, with thousands of newly trained police constables among the first officers to receive them.

The move has been widely welcomed as an important step toward improving the comfort, dignity and welfare of female officers in Kenya.

The introduction of dedicated maternity uniforms means pregnant police officers will no longer have to rely on standard uniforms that may become uncomfortable as their pregnancies progress.

The reform is part of Kenya’s broader effort to modernise the National Police Service and improve officers’ morale and working conditions.
