Ghana part ways with coach Queiroz after poor start to AFCON qualifiers

Carlos Queiroz has parted ways with Ghana’s senior national football team, the Black Stars, after the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Portuguese coach mutually agreed to terminate his contract.

The GFA announced the decision on Thursday, October 1, 2026, following discussions between both parties which it said were held in a spirit of mutual respect.

The development comes after Ghana made a difficult start to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign. The Black Stars suffered a 2-0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in their opening qualifier before losing 4-2 at home to The Gambia, leaving Ghana without a point from their first two matches.

Queiroz, 73, initially took charge of the Black Stars in April 2026 on a short-term contract covering Ghana’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Ghana advanced to the knockout stage before suffering a 1-0 defeat to Colombia.

After the World Cup, Queiroz stepped down, but the GFA reappointed him in September to continue leading the team into the next phase of its programme, including the AFCON qualifiers.

However, after the consecutive defeats to Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia, the two sides agreed to bring their professional relationship to an end.

In his farewell statement, Queiroz thanked the GFA, his technical staff and the Black Stars players. He also urged Ghanaian supporters to continue supporting the players and expressed his hope for the future of Ghanaian football.

The GFA also thanked Queiroz for his commitment and service to the national team and said it would announce its next steps regarding the leadership of the Black Stars in due course.

The departure leaves Ghana searching for a new coach ahead of their next AFCON qualifying fixtures against Somalia in November.
