Bashir was removed from power in April 2019 after months of mass protests that ended his nearly three-decade rule. He was subsequently detained and faced several legal cases, including proceedings over the 1989 military coup that brought him to power.
He was also convicted in Sudan on corruption and illicit-financing charges. In addition, the International Criminal Court has sought his arrest over allegations relating to atrocities committed in Darfur.
Bashir’s latest hospitalization comes as Sudan continues to face a devastating war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, which began in April 2023. His legal and medical situation remains closely linked to the country’s wider political and security crisis.
For now, Bashir remains under custody while receiving treatment in Khartoum, with his lawyers and family continuing to seek permission for possible medical treatment abroad.
