Popular Ugandan comedian Yokana Mbuuse, widely known as Kapere Lufotose, has died at the age of 56, sparking tributes from political leaders, fellow entertainers and fans across Uganda.

Kapere reportedly died on Sunday, November 1, 2026, at a health facility in Buddo, Wakiso District. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, and the cause of death has not been officially established.

His death was announced by the president of Uganda’s National Unity Platform (NUP), Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, who described the loss as devastating.

In a tribute shared on social media, Bobi Wine remembered Kapere as a close friend and comrade who brought laughter to people even during difficult moments.

He also described the late comedian as someone who loved his country and wished it well.

Rise to Fame

Kapere rose to prominence as a member of the popular Amarula Family comedy group, where he performed alongside Allan Mujuni, popularly known as Amooti Omubalanguzi, and Nicholas Mpiirwe, known as Messe Bontwe.

He became widely recognised for his distinctive appearance, exaggerated facial expressions and unique style of physical comedy.

His popular Lufotose character helped establish his reputation in Uganda’s entertainment industry.

Beyond stage performances, Kapere also appeared in television comedy programmes and music videos, including Bobi Wine’s popular song Mr. Money.

Beyond Comedy

The late entertainer was also involved in Uganda’s political activities and maintained a close relationship with the National Unity Platform.

In 2025, he expressed interest in elective politics by collecting nomination forms to contest for a councillor position in Makindye Division.

NUP spokesperson and Leader of the Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, also mourned him, recalling that they had met at the party’s headquarters in Kavule just a week before his death.

Kapere’s death marks the loss of a comedian whose humour, distinctive personality and contribution to Uganda’s entertainment industry earned him recognition among audiences.

He is survived by his wife, Lydia Nakandi, popularly known as Mama Trump, and their children.
