The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially announced former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as the running mate to its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, for the 2027 presidential election.
According to a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the decision followed extensive consultations with party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women groups, and representatives from across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.
The party described the Atiku-Amaechi ticket as a “unity and rescue ticket” aimed at providing Nigerians with an alternative leadership option ahead of the next general election.
ADC said Amaechi’s selection was influenced by his strong showing in the party’s presidential primary, where he finished as runner-up to Atiku, as well as his extensive experience in public service.
The party highlighted his record as former Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two-term Governor of Rivers State, and former Minister of Transportation.
Party leaders believe the Atiku-Amaechi partnership combines political experience, national reach, and governance expertise that could strengthen the opposition coalition’s challenge in the 2027 presidential race. The announcement ends weeks of speculation over who would emerge as Atiku’s running mate and signals the ADC’s determination to build a broad-based coalition ahead of the elections.
The development is expected to reshape political calculations as parties begin positioning for what is anticipated to be a highly competitive 2027 presidential contest.
