The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government.
In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani, Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad on the anniversary and urged citizens to use the occasion to reflect on the country’s journey and future.
The minister described Nigeria’s warmth, hospitality, human capital and natural resources as major strengths, saying the country has the potential to achieve greater prosperity. He also described Nigeria as a beacon of hope under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Tunji-Ojo stressed the importance of peace and stability to national development, while calling on Nigerians to emulate the patriotism of the country’s founding fathers and work towards building a nation future generations can be proud of.
He said Nigeria’s diversity remains a strength and urged citizens to remain hopeful while contributing to the development of the country.
The minister assured Nigerians that the Federal Government, through the Renewed Hope Agenda, would continue working towards improving the country and honouring the sacrifices of its past heroes.
He also called on citizens to use the Independence celebration to promote unity, patriotism, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.
Tunji-Ojo said the government remained committed to strengthening national security, improving public safety and creating an environment where Nigerians can live, work and pursue their legitimate aspirations with confidence.
He added that the Federal Government believes a new Nigeria is achievable and urged Nigerians to continue supporting efforts aimed at building a stronger and more prosperous country.
