Burkina Faso has officially severed diplomatic relations with France, marking another major shift in the West African nation’s foreign policy and bringing its long-strained relationship with its former colonial ruler to an unprecedented low.

The decision took immediate effect on June 26, 2026, according to a government statement read on national television.

The government said it ended diplomatic ties because the conditions for maintaining relations based on mutual respect, national sovereignty, and non-interference in internal affairs no longer existed. Authorities also accused France of acting against Burkina Faso’s interests, pursuing “neo-colonial ambitions,” and supporting subversive networks and terrorist groups operating in the Sahel—allegations that Paris has consistently denied.

In response, France described the move as “hostile and baseless” and said it was reviewing appropriate reciprocal measures. French officials rejected Burkina Faso’s accusations, insisting they were unfounded. Between the two countries have steadily deteriorated since Captain Ibrahim Traoré seized power in a military coup in 2022. Since then, Burkina Faso has expelled French troops and diplomats, suspended military cooperation with Paris, and strengthened its ties with Russia and other regional allies.

Despite the diplomatic rupture, Burkina Faso said the decision is directed at the French government and does not affect the historic ties between the people of both countries. The authorities also urged citizens to continue treating French nationals living in Burkina Faso with respect and in accordance with the law.
