Egypt signs three agreements with Djibouti on ports, logistics, and green energy

Egypt signed three agreements with Djibouti on Sunday covering maritime transport, logistics, and renewable energy, as part of efforts to deepen economic and trade ties between the two countries, according to a cabinet statement. The agreements were signed during an official visit by Egypt’s Minister of Industry and Transport and Deputy Prime Minister, Kamel Al-Wazir, to the Djibouti Ports and Free Zones Authority (DPFZA).

A framework deal will establish a multipurpose container terminal, led by an Egyptian consortium headed by the Holding Company for Maritime & Land Transport (HCMLT) and Djibouti’s state-owned Great Horn Investment Holding. The project aims to enhance bilateral and international trade.

A long-term land lease agreement was signed between El Sewedy Electric and its joint venture, El Sewedy Logistics Djibouti, with the DPFZA and the Khor Ambado Free Zone Company (KAFZCO). The deal will create a regional logistics hub to expand trade and facilitate Egyptian companies’ access to regional markets.

The third agreement will develop a 100-megawatt green port solar project at Djibouti’s Doraleh Container Terminal, operated by the state-owned Société de Gestion du Terminal à conteneurs de Doraleh (SGTD). The project aims to provide stable renewable energy for port cranes and heavy equipment, reducing exposure to global fuel price fluctuations.

Egypt has prioritized a gradual transition to a green economy, in line with the nation’s new economic narrative, allocating EGP 637 billion ($12.9 billion) of its FY2025/2026 public investment plan to green projects, representing 55 percent of total public investments.Economic and investment cooperation between Egypt and Djibouti has expanded in recent months, including the opening of a Banque Misr branch in Djibouti and the establishment of the Egyptian-Djiboutian Joint Business Council in April 2025. The council focuses on energy security, port and free zone development, and the creation of a 150,000-square-metre logistics hub for Egyptian companies.

During his visit, Al-Wazir inaugurated a 300-kilowatt solar power station with 1.29 megawatt-hours of storage in Omar Kajaa, Arta region, aimed at providing sustainable electricity to residents and supporting local economic activity.

Al-Wazir also held meetings with Egyptian and Djibouti officials and companies to expand collaboration on infrastructure, renewable energy, road construction, and port development. Planned projects include the development of the Djibouti National Highway (RN18), feasibility studies for a wind farm in the Djibouti International Freezone, and further expansion of the Port of Djibouti.
