Ethiopia Advances Nuclear Energy Programme to Boost Energy Security, Technological Development
Ethiopia is strengthening its efforts to develop a peaceful, safe and sustainable national nuclear energy programme as part of its long-term development strategy.
The development follows a visit to the Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission, an institution responsible for helping establish the technical and institutional foundations for the country’s nuclear energy ambitions.
Ethiopia is seeking to transform its abundant natural resources and development potential into greater industrialisation, technological advancement and shared economic prosperity.
Reliable and sustainable energy is considered essential to achieving these goals, particularly in areas such as manufacturing, industrial development, digital infrastructure and broader economic transformation.
Nuclear technology could play an important role in strengthening Ethiopia’s energy security while also supporting development in several sectors, including healthcare, agriculture, industry and environmental protection.
The Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission is expected to play a key role in advancing scientific research, developing technical expertise and building the skilled human capital required to support the country’s nuclear ambitions.
Emphasis is also being placed on knowledge transfer and preparing future generations of scientists, engineers and other specialists who will contribute to the development of the sector.
Ethiopia says its nuclear energy programme will be pursued peacefully and with a strong focus on safety, responsibility and sustainability.
The initiative forms part of the country’s broader vision of using science, technology and sustainable energy to accelerate development and improve living standards.
