FG begins rollout of over 500 CNG-powered buses
The federal government has commenced the rollout of over 500 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses across all 36 states of the nation.Following the rollout in Oyo State, the next states scheduled to receive their CNG-powered buses are Lagos, Kwara, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
According to Oluwagbemi, the plan is to distribute a total of 500 CNG-powered buses across all 36 states within the next 24 months.
He explained that the buses will be provided to mass transit operators on commercial terms, with the funds generated from their use being reinvested to acquire more buses for the next phase of distribution.
Oluwagbemi emphasized that the beneficiaries of the buses include state governments, traditional institutions, and private sector operators. He also highlighted that the federal government has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the operators to ensure that fares remain moderate.
He said, “We have signed up on the fares; we have agreed about how it will be operated and how the money will come back to the fund so that more buses will be acquired.
Based on the president’s directive on July 31, 2023, we will make the buses available to mass transit operators on certain commercial terms.
