Ghanaian football has been thrown into mourning following the death of 22-year-old footballer Roland Mawuli in Spain.

Mawuli’s death was announced by his Spanish club, Ciudad de Calasparra, on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.

The club described him as one of its own and paid tribute to the young player, remembering him as a great teammate who would be remembered for his smile.

The Ghanaian was playing for Ciudad de Calasparra in the Preferente Murcia league in Spain.

News of his sudden passing has since triggered an outpouring of condolences from clubs, teammates, friends and members of the football community in the Murcia region.

Mawuli was also previously associated with Ghanaian grassroots club Dansoman Wise XI FC. According to the club, he was one of the first two players from the team to travel to Spain, making his move an important milestone in the club’s history.

Dansoman Wise XI said Mawuli’s journey helped create a pathway for other young talents who hoped to pursue football opportunities outside Ghana.

The club described his contribution as something that would remain part of its history and expressed condolences to his family, loved ones, former teammates and friends.

Mawuli had also spent time in the Spanish youth football system, including a spell with Real Murcia U19 B, according to football records.

His death has come as a shock because of his young age and the promise surrounding his football journey

At just 22, he was still developing his career and pursuing his ambitions in Spanish football.
