I held a really fruitful meeting with the Serbian Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Milutin Stanojevic.

The Serbian President, His Excellency Aleksandar Vučić has extended a special invitation to President John Mahama to attend the 65th anniversary of the Non-Aligned Movement in Belgrade, Serbia from the 31st of August to the 1st of September, 2026.

Our meeting discussed preparations for this extraordinary summit.

President Mahama will serve as special guest of honour largely because Ghana’s founder, The Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah is a founding father of the Non-Aligned Movement.

As is well known, the Non-Aligned Movement was formally established in Belgrade in the then Yugoslavia on September 1, 1961, by visionary leaders such as Ghana’s Kwame Nkrumah, Josip Broz Tito of modern day Serbia, Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser, Indian prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Indonesian president Sukarno.

65 years on, the foundational ideals of the NAM are ever so relevant. The principles of respect for each other’s territorial integrity and sovereignty; non-aggression; non-interference in domestic affairs; equality; nuclear disarmament and peaceful co-existence are much needed in today’s world.

As Kwame Nkrumah famously noted: “We face neither East nor West; We face forward.”

Ghana will continue to cherish, hold dear and diligently abide by the enduring principles of Non-Alignment as espoused by our founder, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
