Renowned Nigerian gospel minister and songwriter Toun Soetan, widely known as Evangelist Shouet, has passed away at the age of 73.The veteran evangelist was celebrated as the original composer of the popular Christian chorus Darling Jesus, a worship song that has been sung for decades in churches across Nigeria and in many parts of the world.
Her ministry in gospel music lasted for more than four decades, during which she emerged as one of the prominent voices in Yoruba gospel worship. Many of her songs gained wide recognition in the early 1990s when they became common features in church services, revival meetings and Christian gatherings.
Aside from “Darling Jesus,” other notable compositions by the gospel minister include Ke Pe Jesu and Cast Your Burdens, which were also widely embraced in Christian worship circles.
Beyond her music career, Soetan served as the Minister in Charge of Trinity World Evangelical Ministry, where she devoted much of her life to preaching, teaching and mentoring younger gospel ministers.Born in Lagos, Nigeria, she spent part of her early years abroad before returning to pursue her education in the country.
She later studied at the University of Ibadan before dedicating herself fully to evangelism and gospel music ministry.
Over the years, Evangelist Soetan built a reputation as a teacher, worship leader and evangelist whose songs were deeply rooted in biblical teachings and focused on spreading the Christian message.Several gospel musicians and church leaders in Nigeria have often described her as one of the pioneers who helped shape indigenous gospel worship in the country.
Following news of her death on March 13, 2026, tributes have continued to pour in from members of the Christian community who remember her for a ministry that inspired generations of believers.
