The American Military Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID) has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Ozioma Elizabeth Onyeaka, alleging that she was secretly detained for more than five years at the Wawa Military Barracks in Kainji, Niger State.

The group condemned what it described as Onyeaka’s “unlawful, unconstitutional and inhumane detention” and called for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding her arrest, transfer and prolonged detention.

According to AVID, Onyeaka was arrested in Anambra State more than five years ago and was allegedly secretly transferred to the military facility, where she was held incommunicado without access to her family, legal representation or adequate medical care.

The organisation said Onyeaka’s family had reportedly been left uncertain about her whereabouts for years, with some relatives believing she might have died.

AVID said Onyeaka’s recent appearance before the Federal High Court in Abuja revealed the alleged physical and psychological effects of her prolonged detention.

The veterans argued that holding a civilian in secret military custody for such a long period without trial would violate constitutional guarantees, due process and fair trial rights.

The group therefore called on the Attorney-General of the Federation to use constitutional powers to discontinue the prosecution against Onyeaka. It also demanded her immediate release and access to comprehensive medical and psychological support.

AVID further called for an independent investigation into her alleged secret transfer and detention at Wawa Barracks, insisting that anyone found responsible for violations of her rights should be held accountable under Nigerian and international law.

The group also urged international organisations, human rights bodies and civil society groups to pay attention to the case and support calls for justice.

The demand has renewed public attention on Onyeaka’s prolonged detention and the wider concerns surrounding the treatment of individuals allegedly held at the Wawa military detention facility.
