Yakubu’s exit was announced on September 7, 2023, and he handed over to the most senior National Commissioner, May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will serve as the Acting Chairman of INEC until a new substantive Chairman is appointed.
President Bola Tinubu has accepted Yakubu’s exit and has awarded him the national honor of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) in recognition of his service to the nation.
May Agbamuche-Mbu, a seasoned legal practitioner with over three decades of experience, will lead INEC until a new Chairman is appointed. She has a strong background in law and has worked with various clients in both the public and private sectors.
Background
Professor Mahmood Yakubu was first appointed as INEC Chairman in 2015 by former President Muhammadu Buhari. He was reappointed for a second term in 2020, making him the first person to serve two terms as INEC Chairman. During his tenure, INEC has organized several elections, including the 2019 general elections, which were widely praised for their transparency and credibility.
Transition
The transition of power from Yakubu to Agbamuche-Mbu marks a significant milestone in the history of INEC. The commission has faced several challenges in recent years, including criticism over its handling of elections and the need for further reforms.
Agbamuche-Mbu’s appointment as Acting Chairman is expected to provide stability and continuity in the commission until a new substantive Chairman is appointed. The process of appointing a new Chairman is expected to begin soon, with the President submitting a nominee to the Senate for confirmation.
