Jerry Gana Urges Atiku to Back Peter Obi for 2027 Presidency ‘For the Sake of Nigerians’

Elder statesman and founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Professor Jerry Gana, has stirred fresh debate over the 2027 presidential race after suggesting that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar should throw his full support behind former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.

Speaking on the need for national unity and putting the country’s interests above personal ambition, Gana reportedly said:

“If I were Atiku, I would tell Obi: ‘Go for the Presidency! I will fully support you for the sake of Nigerians.'”

According to him, Nigeria is at a critical point in its history and requires leaders and political actors to make sacrifices that prioritize the welfare of citizens over individual political aspirations.

The remark comes amid ongoing discussions about opposition unity ahead of the 2027 general elections. Analysts have repeatedly argued that a fragmented opposition could weaken efforts to challenge the ruling party, while a united front could present a stronger alternative to Nigerians.

Although Gana’s statement reflects his personal opinion and does not represent an official position of either Atiku Abubakar or Peter Obi, it has generated widespread reactions among supporters of both politicians. Some Nigerians have praised the call for political collaboration, describing it as a patriotic move, while others insist that each aspirant should pursue his ambitions independently and allow voters to decide.

As political consultations continue across party lines, the possibility of alliances and strategic partnerships ahead of the 2027 elections remains a major topic in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
