Lagos govt begins documentation of informal public spaces, directs occupants to present ownership documents

The Lagos State Government has commenced a comprehensive documentation exercise targeting informal public spaces across the state as part of efforts to improve urban planning, protect public assets, and ensure compliance with land regulations.

State officials said the exercise will identify and document individuals, businesses, and organisations currently occupying public spaces, including open areas, setbacks, road verges, and other government-owned lands that may have been developed or used without proper authorization.

As part of the exercise, all occupants have been directed to present valid ownership and occupancy documents for verification. These may include Certificates of Occupancy (C of O), Deeds of Assignment, registered survey plans, allocation letters, and any other relevant documents proving legal rights to the land or property.

According to the government, the initiative is aimed at creating an accurate database of public spaces, preventing illegal encroachment, supporting infrastructure development, and ensuring that public land is used in accordance with existing laws.

Officials stressed that the documentation exercise is not intended to punish lawful occupants but to distinguish legally occupied properties from unauthorized developments. Occupants who fail to provide valid documentation may face further investigation, enforcement actions, or possible removal where illegal occupation is established.

The Lagos State Government urged all affected residents and businesses to cooperate with officials by presenting the required documents within the stipulated timeframe, noting that the exercise is part of broader efforts to promote orderly physical development and sustainable urban management across the state.
