Leaders Must Serve the People, Not Themselves — Jonathan

As electoral activities gather momentum ahead of upcoming polls, politicians have been urged to reflect on the counsel of Nigeria’s former President and widely regarded Hero of Democracy, Goodluck Jonathan.

Jonathan advised that political ambition should never become a desperate quest for power. Instead, individuals who feel strongly driven by ambition should consider channeling that drive into private ventures such as business or other productive enterprises rather than forcing themselves into positions of public service.

According to the former president, leadership is a call to serve and not an avenue for personal gain or self-promotion. He stressed that those seeking elective positions must be guided by humility and a genuine desire to improve the lives of the people they intend to represent.

Jonathan further noted that true representatives are those who put the welfare, security and development of citizens above their own ambitions or interests. He emphasized that democracy can only thrive when political actors approach leadership with a service-oriented mindset, respect the will of the people and avoid actions capable of undermining peace, unity and the credibility of the electoral process.
