LOCAL MANUFACTURERS BLOCK IMPORTATION OF 1.55 MILLION ELECTRICITY METERS

Nigeria’s local electricity meter manufacturers have successfully prevented the importation of about 1.55 million electricity meters, arguing that domestic producers now have the capacity to meet the country’s demand.

The move is aimed at boosting local manufacturing, creating jobs, conserving foreign exchange, and reducing Nigeria’s dependence on imported electricity meters.

Industry stakeholders say locally produced meters meet the required quality standards and that supporting indigenous manufacturers will strengthen the country’s power sector while encouraging industrial growth.

The decision is expected to promote the Federal Government’s local content policy and provide more opportunities for Nigerian manufacturers to expand production and investment.

However, experts note that local manufacturers must ensure timely production, maintain high-quality standards, and meet nationwide demand to prevent shortages and delays in meter distribution to electricity consumers.

The development comes as efforts continue to close Nigeria’s metering gap and ensure more electricity customers receive prepaid meters, improving transparency in billing and reducing estimated charges.
