Manchester United Legend Dwight Yorke Confirms Interest in Vacant Black Stars Coaching Jobs

Former Manchester United and Aston Villa striker Dwight Yorke has confirmed his interest in becoming the next head coach of Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars.

Yorke’s interest comes as Ghana begins the search for a replacement for Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz, who left his position following the Black Stars’ difficult start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

Speaking to Asempa FM, Yorke said the Ghana job would appeal to many top coaches because of the country’s football history. He also revealed that his friendship with former Ghana international Sammy Kuffour had strengthened his interest in the position.

“It is a job that most top coaches will be interested in because of the history of Ghanaian football,” Yorke said.

He added that he was “very much interested” in the Ghana coaching job.

The 54-year-old Trinidad and Tobago football legend had earlier indicated that, if given the opportunity, he would seek to introduce a more dynamic, attacking style of football to the Black Stars.

Yorke is best remembered for his successful spell at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson. He was part of the club’s historic 1998/99 treble-winning team and formed a prolific attacking partnership with Andy Cole. During his time at Old Trafford, he won the UEFA Champions League, three Premier League titles and the FA Cup.

After retiring from playing, Yorke moved into coaching. He took charge of Australian A-League club Macarthur FC in 2022 and guided the team to its first Australia Cup triumph during his debut season.

He later became head coach of Trinidad and Tobago in November 2024. His tenure ended in March 2026 after the country failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Yorke recorded four wins in 18 matches during his time in charge.

Yorke holds a UEFA Pro Licence, as well as UEFA A and B licences, having completed part of his coaching education while working with Manchester United’s youth setup at Carrington.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation have established a five-member committee to identify and recommend a new Black Stars coach.

The committee is chaired by former GFA vice-president Fred Pappoe and includes former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah, Anthony Baffoe, Agbesi Dzakpasu and Faisal Chibsah.

The committee is expected to submit its recommendation by October 9, 2026.

Ghana’s next AFCON qualifying fixtures are scheduled for November, when the Black Stars will face Somalia in a double-header.
