The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has confirmed that the death toll from the recent floods across Ghana has risen to 34, as emergency response teams continue rescue, recovery and relief operations in affected communities.
According to NADMO, the devastating floods have impacted seven regions, leaving tens of thousands of people displaced and causing widespread destruction to homes, businesses and public infrastructure.
The Greater Accra Region recorded the highest number of displaced residents, followed by the Central Region, with several communities in the Volta, Western, Ashanti, Western North and Eastern regions also affectedRichard Amo Yartey, Director of Inspectorate at NADMO, said authorities are still verifying reports of missing persons, warning that the number of fatalities could increase as search and recovery efforts continue.
Emergency teams have been deployed to support affected communities, while relief items including food, water, mattresses and other essential supplies are being distributed to victims.
The floods were triggered by days of heavy rainfall that inundated major towns and cities, particularly Accra, where overflowing drains and waterways submerged roads and residential areas.
Government agencies, security services and humanitarian organisations have since intensified efforts to assist displaced families and restore normalcy in the hardest-hit locationsNADMO has urged residents in flood-prone communities to remain vigilant, follow safety directives and relocate to higher ground whenever necessary.
The agency also appealed to the public to cooperate with emergency responders as authorities continue assessing the full extent of the damage and providing assistance to those affected
