The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has concluded arrangements to honour Super Eagles star forward, Moses Simon, who is set to win his 100th cap for Nigeria at the senior level in today’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match against Madagascar.
The fleet-footed forward made his debut for the Super Eagles on March 25, 2015. Heading into today’s fixture, he has amassed 99 caps and scored 12 goals for the national team.In those 99 appearances, Simon has been part of a squad that secured 49 victories, 30 draws, and 20 defeats.
A diligent, dedicated, and resilient servant of the game, Simon’s career milestone includes 64 competitive matches and 35 friendly games. Furthermore, he has featured in 23 AFCON finals matches and 22 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Reflecting on his journey, one of Simon’s most memorable early contributions came during the 2018 FIFA World Cup preliminary qualifiers against Swaziland. Following a scoreless draw in Mbabane, the Eagles needed a win in the return leg in Port Harcourt to advance. With the match deadlocked late in the game, Simon scored a brilliant 22-yard direct free-kick to set Nigeria on course for a vital 2-0 victory.
Tributes have poured in ahead of the milestone, with NFF Acting General Secretary Dr. Emmanuel Ikpeme lauding the player’s enduring commitment to the country.
“I can testify that Moses Simon is an incredible player and a wonderful human being, having related with him at close quarters for several years. He is a patriot to the core and forever passionate and dedicated to the Nigerian cause,” Dr. Ikpeme said on Thursday.
“The NFF celebrates him on this special occasion and wishes him many more caps with the Super Eagles.”
Meanwhile, Dr. Ikpeme has charged the Super Eagles to go all out and secure a resounding victory against the Barea of Madagascar.
“We are back to the familiar surroundings of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, for another qualifying race. It was here in Uyo that the Super Eagles won the tickets to the 2019 and 2025 AFCON finals.
“The NFF has absolute confidence in the team to run another good race and win the ticket with matches to spare,” he stated.
