Nigeria condemns deaths of 2 nationals in S. Africa protests

The Nigerian government has strongly condemned the killing of two of its citizens in South Africa during ongoing anti-immigrant protests that have triggered rising tensions across parts of the country.

According to Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two nationals were killed in separate incidents linked to the recent wave of anti-migrant unrest, which has targeted foreign workers and businesses in several South African cities.

One of the victims was reportedly shot dead in front of his shop in eMalahleni by unidentified attackers, while the second, identified as Emeka Iroegbu, was allegedly killed during a police interrogation in Pretoria.

South African authorities have said investigations into the incidents are ongoing.

The Nigerian government described the killings as unacceptable and part of a worrying pattern of violence against foreigners, warning that continued attacks could strain diplomatic relations between both countries.

Officials also demanded accountability and called for full investigations into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The incidents occurred amid broader anti-immigrant protests in South Africa, where demonstrators have blamed foreign nationals for unemployment, crime, and pressure on public services. The unrest has led to attacks, looting, and increased security deployments in affected areas.

Nigeria has urged South African authorities to ensure the protection of its citizens and other foreign nationals, while calling for justice for the victims and their families.
