Nigeria Considers Ban On Wooden Boats After Fatal Waterway Accidents

The Federal Government is considering measures to restrict or potentially ban the use of wooden boats on some Nigerian waterways following a series of fatal boat accidents that have raised fresh concerns about passenger safety.

The renewed concern follows a recent boat mishap in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State, where a wooden boat carrying passengers and motorcycles capsized while crossing the River Katsina-Ala. Several passengers were rescued, while others were reported missing and feared dead.

Preliminary reports attributed the Benue incident to a combination of factors, including overloading, the large number of motorcycles on board and problems with the boat during the journey. Authorities also reiterated the importance of wearing life jackets and complying with established maritime safety regulations.

The incident has renewed calls for stronger regulation of inland water transportation, particularly in communities where wooden boats remain a major means of crossing rivers and waterways.

Beyond the type of boats being used, safety advocates have highlighted other issues that contribute to accidents, including overloading, inadequate safety equipment, poor enforcement of passenger limits and unsafe operations after dark.

Authorities are expected to strengthen inspections and enforcement while considering longer-term measures to improve the safety of water transportation across the country.

The proposed restrictions are aimed at reducing avoidable deaths and ensuring that passengers using Nigeria’s waterways have access to safer vessels and properly regulated transportation services.
