Nigerian tailor completes 120-hour sewing marathon in Guinness World Record bid

Kano-based Nigerian tailor Abdulkadir Hassanul Basari has completed a 120-hour non-stop sewing marathon in an attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for the longest sewing marathon by an individual.

The five-day challenge, tagged “Sew for the Nation,” began on October 7, 2026, at the sports complex of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria in Kano and ended on October 12. Basari, the Chief Executive Officer of Basari Apparels and Textiles Nigeria Limited, spent the marathon working continuously at his sewing machine.

Beyond the pursuit of a world record, the initiative had a humanitarian purpose. Basari used the challenge to produce school uniforms for pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds in public schools, combining his tailoring skills with efforts to support education.

Basari was seeking to surpass the reported record of 106 hours, 55 minutes and 20 seconds, achieved by fellow Nigerian tailor Oluwaseun Kuforiji in January 2025 and officially recognised in March 2025. His 120-hour target would therefore exceed that benchmark by more than 13 hours.

Following the completion of the challenge, Basari celebrated with his team and expressed gratitude to his family and supporters for helping him complete what he described as a journey of sacrifice, resilience and determination.

However, completing the 120-hour marathon does not automatically make Basari a Guinness World Records holder. The organisation must review the evidence and verify that all requirements and rules for the category were followed before officially recognising a new record.

The feat has nevertheless drawn attention to Nigerian craftsmanship and the ability of vocational skills to contribute to humanitarian causes, with the Sew for the Nation project using a record attempt to support children who may otherwise struggle to afford school uniforms.
