Oscar-winning Irish singer-songwriter Glen Hansard has died at the age of 56 following a motorcycle crash in Dublin, Ireland.

The accident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, and emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the single-vehicle crash.

Hansard rose to international fame after starring in the 2007 film Once and co-writing the Academy Award-winning song “Falling Slowly” with Czech musician Markéta Irglová.

The song earned the pair the 2008 Oscar for Best Original Song and later inspired the hit Broadway musical based on the film.

Tributes have poured in from across the music world, with artists including Bruce Springsteen and Bono praising Hansard as an extraordinary musician, generous friend, and humanitarian.

Beyond his music, he was widely admired for his charity work, particularly his annual Christmas Eve busking event in Dublin, which raised millions of euros to support homeless people.

He is survived by his wife and young son.
