Qatar has donated 15 buses to Senegal to support transportation ahead of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, as the West African country prepares to host the first Olympic event on African soil.
The buses, accompanied by a consignment of security equipment, are part of Qatar’s initiative to help countries hosting major international sporting events by sharing its experience in organising global competitions.
Qatar hosted the FIFA World Cup in 2022, the Asian Cup and the Formula One Grand Prix. It is also preparing to host the Asian Games in 2030.
Ibrahima Wade, General Coordinator of the Dakar 2026 organising committee, said “the donation would strengthen Senegal’s capacity to organise major international events.”
He said the equipment would improve mobility and security while helping develop local expertise in managing large-scale sporting competitions.
The Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games are scheduled to open on October 31, bringing together young athletes from more than 200 countries and territories for a two-week competition.
Athletes aged between 15 and 18 are expected to compete across 25 sports, with events taking place at venues in Dakar and surrounding areas.
The Games represent a historic milestone for African sport, offering Senegal an opportunity to showcase its organisational capacity, cultural heritage and hospitality to an international audience.
Qatar’s contribution also highlights international cooperation in sports development, with the donation expected to support transportation and security arrangements during the competition.
